Client Course Description

One of Robert Trent Jones, Sr. most popular designs, this course was built in 1948 on sandy, rolling land perfectly suited for golf. Each hole has its own descriptive name to give golfers an idea of what to expect before they tee off. “Waterloo”, hole 13, is the signature hole of the Dunes Course. Famous worldwide, it is a legendary hole where Lake Singleton comes into play. “Waterloo” has received every accolade and award as one of the greatest golf holes in the world.

Designer Notes

In 2003 we restored all the greens to their original shape and made minor alterations to the 1st, 8th, 13th, 16th and 18th greens so as to remain consistent with the course’s original design.

In 2013, the Club successfully converted all greens from A-1 Bentgrass to Ultradwarf Champion Bermuda surfaces. Additional projects completed during the closure included significantly enlarging the practice tee and range, the construction and addition of a new chipping green and practice bunker as well as the addition of over 250 yards to the championship tees. The Championship Course now measures 7,450 yards, which positively positioned the Dunes Golf and Beach Club to co-host the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship.

In Rees’ own words, “The golf course my father, Robert Trent Jones, created for the Dunes Club in 1948 is one of his true masterpieces. It is a challenging championship course designed on ideal land for golf; sandy, rolling terrain along the ocean with magnificent trees framing the fairways. It has been one of the highlights of my career to have had the opportunity to restore and enhance the original design intent. The course is now positioned for play by today’s golfers.”

In the summer of 2018 we undertook a complete restoration of all of the bunkers on the golf course to reclaim and enhance the Robert Trent Jones design style and strategy. All of the bunkers were rebuilt with new drainage, liners and sand.
