Sea Island Golf Club (Plantation Course)
Course Type: Resort
Design Role: Complete Redesign 1992, 1998
Co-Designer(s): Greg Muirhead
Client Course Description
With Rees Jones’s masterful renovation in 1998 of this Walter Travis original, the Plantation Course unfolds among a forest of ancient live oak and cedar, with a hint of danger lurking in its tidal creeks and lakes. Players appreciate the expansive fairways and stunning Atlantic Ocean views that make Plantation one of the best South golf courses.
Designer Notes
This course is part of the large, world-class Cloister Hotel complex, with its elegant new Lodge, on St. Simons Island. The redesign of the Plantation Course combines the best of parkland features with the windswept beauty and seaside vistas of a links course. The strategic nature of the design is evident at the beautiful 12th hole, which plays through trees to a well-bunkered green with the Atlantic Ocean as a back-drop.
