Time Warner Cable NewsIf you're an average golfer, you know the Monster Golf Course is no joke – it’ll take about a day’s work to play all 18 holes.
But with Montreign Casino coming to the site, work is under way to change that.
“There will be probably five sets of tees, different lengths, challenge different players, but it’s going to be as easier course to play, to get around,” said Tim Lies, the Adelaar project manager.
To make the Monster more playable, Adelaar has brought in Rees Jones to redesign the course.
“Some of the technology is rather old. Some of the components don’t work in terms of the drainage pipes, irrigation, cart paths, even the greens. All that is going to be rebuilt and brought up to today’s standards,” said Bryce Swanson, vice president of Rees Jones Inc.
As part of the redesign, holes from both the current Monster Golf Course and the Old International Course will be used, and drives will range anywhere from 100 to over 500 yards.
“Blend it in with the nature. We’ll have the manicure fairways. We’ll also be introducing some native areas, blending all of it together,” Swanson said.
Along with adding tees and a new cart path, this golf course will also be getting a new clubhouse and a drainage system.
“It’s where the old clubhouse was, if you’re familiar with the old monster, it’ll be in the same vicinity. There’s no reason to change it. It’s the most beautiful view in the Catskills from there,” Lies said.
“The golf course is going to be playable every day, even after a rainstorm event, people will be able to get out there and enjoy it,” said Swanson.
When all is said and done, course designers say it will be a one-of-a-kind golf course, fitting right in with the Montreign Casino.
“It’ll be a very, very different course in many irrespective, but still have some of the old visual feel and look of the old monster,” said Lies.
