Designer Notes

For over forty years the Wellman Golf Club welcomed members and the public to play golf on its 18-hole golf course. In 2010, however, the Wellman Golf Club’s owner filed for bankruptcy protection and the golf course has been closed since then. Florence County (the “County”) purchased the golf course property in 2020, and in 2021 entered into a 50-year ground lease with the City for the purpose of the City’s construction and operation of a public golf course.

Rees Jones and Bryce Swanson worked with the City to restore and enhance the old Wellman Golf Club course to an 18-hole championship course that will attract locals, golf tourists as well as amateur and professional golf associations and organizations to hold their tournaments at the Wellman Golf Club.
